Each year, a Teacher of the Year and an Employee of the Year are chosen for the Telfair County School System. The process begins when principals nominate candidates from their schools. Next, all nominees complete candidate application forms and submit them to the curriculum director. Finally, applications are reviewed by a panel of retired educators and candidates are ranked based on their responses to a series of questions on the application. The panel then selects a teacher and an employee to represent each school, and the Teacher of the Year and Employee of the Year for the system are chosen from the school representatives... At Telfair County Middle School, Mrs. Carol Kahrmann’s 7th grade Math classes have been pounding the pavement learning about integers and how to add and subtract negative numbers. This is one of the first Common Core Standards that Mrs. Kahrmann teaches her 7th grade classes. In an effort to teach her students the rules associated with the addition and subtraction of positive and negative numbers, Mrs. Kahrmann takes her classes to the parking area located on the Telfair County Middle School Campus and uses the parking lines as a base for making the number lines. The students use sidewalk chalk to create their own life-size number lines. The students then walk the number line to physically solve their mathematical integer problems. Mrs. Peggy Lewis from the McRae-Milan area of Georgia came to visit Mrs. Carol Kahrmann’s 7th grade math gifted class. Mrs. Lewis has been employed at a bank for 36 years, and is currently the cashier assistant at Merchant and Citizens Bank.
