Historic Trojan Baseball Season

Following a 2017 campaign that saw the Telfair Trojans baseball team advance to the GHSA Class A-Public semifinals, the expectations were set high for a team that returned the bulk of its starting lineup. The 2018 Trojans were up to the task, making a historic run through the state playoffs and playing for a state championship for the first time in school history. The Trojans enjoyed wins over perennial powers Appling County and Vidalia and also defeated rival Dodge County for the first time in a decade.  The Trojans entered the 2018 playoffs as the #5 overall seed and proceeded to defeat Lanier County and Region 1 Champion Baconton Charter before sweeping region rival and semifinal opponent Irwin County in Ocilla. The Trojans eventually fell to Gordon Lee in the state championship at Savannah’s historic Grayson Stadium.

Telfair finished with an overall record of 24-10—the second consecutive 20-win season for the Trojans and second-best win total in school history. The pitching staff posted a 2.51 ERA while holding opponents to a .220 batting average and striking out 237 batters—both marks were top-3 in school history. The Telfair offense batted .284 and outscored opponents 217-108. Senior pitcher Ryan Dopson was the first 10-game winner for Telfair County in a decade.  Dopson also set the single-season record for singles with 33. Senior Ian Blankenship threw a no-hitter against Echols County—just the 5th in school history. Blankenship struck out only 5 times in 126 plate appearances and was named the Region 2-A Defensive Player of the Year.  Sophomore Trey Bess was honored as the Region 2-A Offensive Player of the Year after hitting 9 home runs.  Several other Trojans were named all-region. Blankenship, Dopson, and Bess were named 1st Team All-State by the Georgia Dugout Preview Magazine.  Seniors Evan Adams, Ian Blankenship, Ryan Dopson, Harrison Wood, and Bryce Yawn finished as the winningest class in Telfair County history.  Dopson signed a baseball scholarship with Brewton Parker.
